Reflecting on the semester

What a ride it has been. When I first started this project, I was really excited because I've always wanted to dabble in sound as part of my creative pursuit. Along the way, I realised many things about my working style, especially when working on something I'm genuinely interested in:

(1)
I am super curious about everything and want to try lots of different things - which can be a double-edged sword. I ran into many complications along the way. With a buzzing mind and many ideas I wanted to try, I set myself back quite a lot, hesitating or going in too many directions. As a person with a scattered mind, this definitely did not help.

(2)
I need to work more on organising my thoughts (and my things). For Semester 1, it was lovely being able to go ham and experiment as much as we wanted. However, towards the end of the semester, I found myself struggling to tie things together, especially in terms of design direction. Moving forward to Semester 2, I hope to truly sit down and synthesise everything I've done so far into a central experience, rooted in my design practice.

(3)
Trying too many things at once. I think at this point I'm repeating myself - but I have to stress this, as the strain of pursuing too many things took a toll on my documentation and the stringing of things together towards the end. Moving forward, I will try to narrow things down to keep everything simple for myself and reduce my workload :)

All in all, it was a good run. I tried things I never thought I would - like making a radio wave receiver, making noise with trash, or building a vibrational pillow. This semester, the opportunity to try as many things as we could was great; I could really see which directions worked out and which didn't.

Moving on to Semester 2

Over the semester break, I hope to catch up on my readings for dissertation, especially since many of them are thick books that demand rigorous reading. In addition, I plan to:

(1)   Build further on the structure of the vibrational pillow, exploring different materials beyond air pillows.

(2)   Figure out a renewed method of conducting the Sound Walk with a group of people - making things clearer and more structured

(3)   Most importantly: sit down and question myself on how to synthesise all these directions together, to be more rooted in my design practice. Working towards a final outcome will help me picture the finish line more clearly.
